ASSURANCE (of Salvation)
The confidence that each believer in Christ has of eternal security; being saved from mortal sin and sin’s penalty of death through the faithfulness of God through Christ.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:

  • COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS
The premise of living in community is borne out of the inherent nature of God, a community being made up of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. New Testament writers spoke frequently of the welfare of other believers, including hospitality, care, and aid.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Acts 5:3: The Holy Spirit will manifest himself in the sharing of goods with one another.
I Corinthians 16: Paul shows, in word and in example, that caring for others is a constant and ongoing work of God living in believers.

  • CONFIDENCE
This ties in with ASSURANCE in the notion of our eternal security. Another aspect of CONFIDENCE is our certainty of God’s character and our relationship to Him. The consistency of God’s presence, character, and promises gives us boldness and security in approaching Him in with our requests, hurts, pains, sin, celebration, and adoration. Also, a confidence in how God will take care of us (e.g., protection, supplying our needs, etc.).
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Acts 4:29: Paul’s statement about the confidence we have in speaking the Word of God.
Psalm 71: The Psalmist talks of the confidence he has had in God "since my youth."
Proverbs 3:26: God will keep us safe.
Hebrews 4:16: We can boldly approach the throne of grace with confidence.
I John 3:21: The confidence we have before God.

  • CREATION
The central theme is that God is the creator of the "heavens and earth." This includes the creation of man. The creation theme is consistent in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The act of creation comes from "God’s word," as he speaks things into being.  Because God created us, this ties us relationally to Him in the deepest and most critical way; becomes the most basic conception of God that we know. Finally, creation is an act of the Trinity as supported in Scripture.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Genesis 1:1: Creator of the "heavens and the earth."
Genesis 1:3; Psalms 33:9 and 148:5: Creation takes place by God’s word (speaking).
Colossians 1:16; I Corinthians 8:6: Christ, as God, "in Him all things were created."
Genesis 1:2; Job 33:4; Psalm 104:30: Concludes the notion of the triune participation in creation by including the work of the Holy Spirit.
  • Only You
  • DELIVERANCE
The Old Testament centers its meaning of deliverance around safety and the ability to escape; taking a people out of destruction (e.g., Moses as the deliverer of the people of Israel).  God’s purpose for this deliverance is not to provide relief from affliction, hardship, or suffering, but rather to free them up to worship and serve Him. Christ is not referred to as the deliverer in the New Testament, although synonyms for "the deliver" do exist in reference to Christ.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Psalm 33:19; 34:6; 107:6,13,19: God delivers His people from many different sets of circumstances.
Romans 8:21: God’s promise to deliver creation from decay.
Matthew 6:13: God’s deliverance of the believer from evil.
Psalm 40:17; I Corinthians 10:13: God provides a way of escape for the sinner.

  • FAITH
This noun translates in to the term "believe," as it is our active response to God (not to be confused with God’s FAITHfulness to us). The active presence of faith can be defined as the sense of self-renouncing, trustful reliance upon God; the attitude of the heart.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
I John 2:22-23; II John 7-9: To have faith in Christ, his true identity must first be realized.
Titus 1:1; II Thessalonians 2:13; I Peter 1:22: Faith is knowing, believing, and obeying "the truth."
I John 3:2; 5:18-20; Titus 1:2; I Corinthians 2:10-13: Christian faith rests on the recognition of apostolic and biblical testimony as God’s own testimony to his son.

  • FORGIVENESS
The Old Testament provides a number of definitions for "forgiveness": "to cover"; " to bear"; "take away guilt"; and "to pardon." The New Testament also has a number of definitions for "forgiveness": "to put away"; "disregarding"; "putting aside"; and "to forgive sins." The act of forgiveness is both between man and God, and man to man (the vertical relationship and the horizontal relationship).
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Ephesians 4:32: God, through Christ, has forgiven man.
Hebrews 10:17: God will not remember our sins once forgiven.
II Corinthians 12:13; Colossians 2:13: God initiates forgiveness.
Luke 17:4; Matthew 18:22: No limits exist regarding our forgiveness of each other.
Luke 17:3-4: Repentance is necessary to receiving forgiveness.

  • GOD AS VICTOR
Throughout both the Old Testament and the New Testament, the writers of Scripture refer to God’s power to conquer and our power to conquer through Christ.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Exodus 15:3: Referring to God as a warrior.
I Corinthians 15:54, 57: Death has been overtaken by victory through God.
I John 5:4: Acknowledgment of the ability to overcome and be victorious through God.

  • HEALING
Healing is a prominent theme in Scripture, referring to physical, emotional, and spiritual matters. Healing comes only from God, and is what Jesus based many of his teachings. Sickness is a consequence of fallen man and man’s sinful nature, not necessarily individual sin.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
John 9:1-3; 11:4: Christ states that sickness is not the result of "who sinned."
Matthew 9:2,22,29; 8:13; 15:28: Faith as a key part of divine healing.

  • JUDGEMENT
Judgment is the condemnation we face because of our failure to live up to God’s righteousness. God, because of his inherent character of justice, judges the wicked and unrepentant. Scripture also addresses this topic in regard to man’s judgment of each other, stating that no one can justly condemn the righteous if God is on his/her side.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Job 10:2; Jeremiah 42:18; John 12:48: God is the one who condemns.
I Kings 8:32; Romans 3:8; Galatians 1:8-9: God condemns based on his justice.
Matthew 12:41-42; Luke 11:31-32; John 5:29; Romans 5:16, 18: The wicked and unrepentant are the ones who realize God’s condemnation.

  • LOVE
NOTE: A few brief phrases and a handful of Scripture references can not do this topic justice. However, in an effort to give helpful insight, an attempt will be made.   When asked the greatest commandment, Christ stated, "To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is this: to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40; Mark 12:29-31). Because of these two commandments, love is of preeminent importance in the Bible.   The basis for this passage reveals two forms of love: the love of God and the love of man.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
I John 4:8,16: God is love.
John 14:31: Christ’s love for the Father (implies a mutual love).
    Deuteronomy 10:18; 33:3; I Kings 10:9; Hosea 14:4, I John 4:10; John 17:23: God’s love for man.
I Kings 8:23; II Chronicles 6:14; Nehemiah 1:5; Psalm 89:28; Daniel 9:4: The steadfast and unchanging love of God.

Mercy is the witholding of punishment/pardon/forgiveness by someone in power over a transgressor. Includes compassion, sympathy, and the mitigation of penalties. Again, this is an attribute practiced in both God’s relationship to man and man’s relationship with one another.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Isaiah 63:7; Psalm 79:8-9: God’s mercy on Israel.
Matthew 5:17; James 2:13: Exercising mercy and compassion toward fellow man.

  • POWER OF GOD
Although a general topic, Scripture speaks repeatedly of God’s power, both in action and in creation. God’s power can be direct (parting the sea for the Israelites); working through others (Paul’s profound impact on the Gospel of Christ); or in his creation.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Exodus 32:11: God leading his people out of Egypt.
Proverbs 24:5: The power of a wise man.
Matthew 24:30: God’s power in creation.
    Luke 1:35; 4:14; Romans 1:16; 1:20; I Corinthians 6:14: The unlimited power of God.

  • SACRIFICE (Atonement)
Superseded by the "total depravity of man" principle, the need for sacrifice is a direct result of sinfulness. The Old Testament establishes the principle of sacrifice in giving burnt offerings to God, thus "making atonement," (Leviticus 1:4); and being absolved of "sin and guilt" (Leviticus 4:20; 7:7). This set the stage for the New Testament principle of atonement and sacrifice, but this time not through offering animals, but by God offering his sinless Son as a sacrifice.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Hebrews 9:26; 10:5-10: Christ was the perfect sacrifice.
    Romans 3:25-26; 6:23; Galatians 3:13.
I Corinthians 6:20; Galatians 5:1: Christ paid the price that set us free.
Romans 3:25: Christ’s sacrifice turns away the wrath of God.

  • SAVIOR (the person of Christ)
One who saves or delivers, this is the embodiment of the one who saves (provides atonement). Referring to Christ, the term is not only "exhibiting" the behavior, skills, or character of salvation, but actually embodies or constitutes salvation (is, in fact, salvation/Savior).
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Luke 2:11; Acts 5:31; Phillipians 3:20-21; Ephesians 5:23: Christ embodies salvation.
Acts 4:12: Only through Christ are we saved.

I Chronicles 29:11: David’s statement of greatness and majesty of God.

  • THE BLOOD
BLOOD OF CHRIST/SACRIFICE OF CHRIST: The central theme of the blood sacrifice is taken from the Old Testament, where the priests of the tribe of Levi (the Levites, see Leviticus 17:11) used the blood of animals for atonement (pay the price for their sins). The premise was that the price paid must match the offense, called a "redemption price" in Exodus 21:30 & 30:12; Job 33:24. Once the adequate price had been paid, then the offense was "canceled." See Hebrews 9:11-18 to see the New Testament confirmation of the symbolism of the blood sacrifice. To the believer in Christ, the blood signifies life given up in death, thus owing our salvation to Christ’s death.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Romans 5:19: Paul confirming we are saved by the blood (death/sacrifice) of Christ.
John 6:53-56; Acts 5:28; Ephesians 2:13; I John 5:6; Revelation 1:5 & 19:13: Definitive statement that the blood of Christ meant Christ’s death.

  • THE CROSS
More than simply a physical structure (upright wooden pole, tree, stake, etc.) of punishment and consequence, the cross must be understood first from its effect upon the victim and the cultural relevance of the act. The "death of God" in this manner represents a subservient, humble, and degrading act of obedience to God. Once this stark reality is embraced, only then can the understanding of God’s sacrifice of his Son be fully embraced. Through the act of Christ’s crucifixion on the cross, God provided salvation for man, the forgiveness of sin.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Phillipians 2:6-8: The servanthood and humility of Christ going to the cross.
I Corinthians 15:13: God provided the forgiveness of sin through the cross.
I Corinthians 2:2: The basis of the Christian message is found in Christ’s death on the cross.
John 3:16; 15:16: The cross of Christ is the ultimate demonstration of God’s love for man.
  • Take Forgiveness
  • TRANSCENDENCE
As transcendent, God is uniquely different than all of creation. God’s being is eternal, the world’s temporal, and his knowledge is complete. His character is consistent (loving, just, against evil, holy). God sustains, guides, and governs all that He created.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Psalm 104: God in relation to what He’s created.
John 8:23: Only Christ is "from above" (with God).

  • WISDOM
The "wisdom literature" of the Old Testament refers to the books of Job, Proverbs, and Ecclesiastes. Outside of these three books, the word "wisdom" primarily refers to man’s wisdom (skills, knowledge, ability) and not necessarily God’s. In the New Testament, wisdom is an attribute of God, and is embodied by Christ, and often refers to understanding the character and will of God.
    SCRIPTURE REFERENCES:
Luke 11:49: Wisdom is an attribute of God.
I Corinthians 2:4-7: God’s divine will for man.
Matthew 12:42; 11:25: The intellectual capacity of man.
